Happy Birthday Devyn!

Our young man turns 13 today.

It wasn't that long ago that you were this little boy I remember with a head full of blonde curly hair, big blue eyes, a smile that so effortlessly and readily stretched from ear to ear.

Devyn, you came into this world ready to learn and it was very obvious from day one that your ability to learn was a gift. I remember teaching you to ride a bike at 2 years old. You were determined to ride a two wheel bike and I couldn't talk you into using training wheels. I held the bike sturdy while you climbed up to the seat because you couldn't touch the ground. "Come on Dad," you said, ready to go. I ran behind you as you peddled and after the first couple of feet all you could say was, "Let go Dad. Let go now." I let go and you kept peddling that bike up the street. When it came time to stop falling over was your only recourse as your feet couldn't reach the ground. That didn't stop you though. Every time you wanted to ride your bike you would just ride until you had to stop and then you'd just fall over as if that was part of the process. You were the smallest kid on the block but rode your bike like you were the biggest. Your spirit has always been larger than life. You would play street hockey with the big boys and would never let your size get in the way.

You loved your toy airplanes. You would line them up in one long row with the wings just touching. If anyone messed up your row you would chase them around the house and hit them with your huge bag of airplanes. You were always building something. It didn't matter what you had to work with, it all found itself in a pile as high as you could manage. We could never get you to use a spoon when eating your morning cereal. Your little head was always in your cereal bowl. You have always had an angle's face and the devil's smile. We always knew when you were up to no good. You learned how to crawl out of your crib at 10 months old and would come into Mommy and Daddys room and wake us up.

On your first day of school you cried, kicked, screamed and bit your teacher in the hand. When you were in the 1st  grade we were told that you were very gifted child and that you should be in GATE (Gifted and Talented Education). You were one of the youngest kids ever put into the Gate program. Ever since grade school your teachers have all said that you're a natural leader.

Your mother and I are so proud of you Son. You are an amazing young man with a heart of gold. You so willingly give to others and so often think of others before yourself. A zest for life emanates from you as does warmth from the Sun. You have a presence that speaks loudly to everyone around you drawing them to you like a flowers fragrance draws bees to its pollen. We have no doubt of the incredible man you will grow into.

We love you so much.
